Acupuncture and Fertility – Can It Help You Get Pregnant?

The ability to get pregnant is something that many women and couples expect and yet it is not something that is guaranteed. There are many reasons why a woman may not get pregnant. When a couple is trying to conceive, then it is natural for them to look for ways that might increase their chances. Acupuncture is something that is thought by some to be a cure, but acupuncture for fertility is better described as a method that has substantial evidence, backing claims that it can increase the chances of fertility.

The Anguish of Not Conceiving

It is not uncommon for a woman who wants to have a baby too feel deep anguish when they learn for one reason or another that they are infertile. They will often seek out methods of modern medicine as well as traditional options for overcoming their infertility. If they seek modern medicine, then they may look for donor embryos and eggs as well as by receiving IVF and this certainly is one option but often an expensive one.

The cost of going this direction can range anywhere from several hundred dollars up to tens of thousands of dollars. Procedures such as Intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization are very expensive procedures. They have a significant rate of success that ranges between 20% to 60% but at the same time, there are large numbers who are still unable to conceive with this method which makes its costs even more difficult to bare.

Chinese Medicine

A number of techniques that were developed from Chinese medicine are still practiced around the world and modern studies of these methods have been studied and found to have various levels of success. The use of various herbs, plants, bark and other natural substances along with practices and techniques such as moxibustion, Tai Chi, and acupuncture are some of the practices used from this traditional form of medicine. Acupuncture is one practice that has become very popular around the world including in the West.

The Evolution of Acupuncture For Fertility

The practice of acupuncture is something that has existed for at least three thousand years and some say it goes all the way back to the Stone Age. By some estimations, it was first used after the development of tools that had a sharp edge and was used to relieve abscesses and for bloodletting. Some of the earliest documentation on this practice shows that they originally used needles made of gold and silver, but modern needles are stainless steel.

The practice of acupuncture by modern physicians has been used in the US for over 200 years. As recently as 1997 the Institute of Health has formally advocated acupuncture for the relief of nausea, vomiting, and pain after surgery. According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly 40% of adults in the US have used some type of alternative therapy for a variety of conditions.

Because of a delicate balance between various productive organs within a woman, stress is something that can play a major role in preventing a woman from ovulating. This is often a major contributor to infertility. Stress has been known to cause the uterus and fallopian tubes to have spasms which can inhibit the sperm from being able to fertilize the egg. Stress is also a factor in men and can cause changes in the sperm that reduces the chance of their being able to fertilize the egg.

How Does Acupuncture Increase the Chance Of Fertility?

One of the major ways in which acupuncture increases the chance that a couple can conceive is by lowering stress and increasing the amount of blood flow that goes to reproductive organs. One of the more important things to understand about the methodology used in acupuncture is the fact that its priority is in helping the woman to keep their pregnancy as much as it is to help them become pregnant. The process of acupuncture will include the use of needles inserted to stimulate over 2,000 acupuncture points found on the human body.

By stimulating the natural flow of a person’s ‘qi’ it can help improve conditions that would inhibit fertility and help the person relieve stress which is often a factor. It is a treatment that is equally as effective with men as it is with women. This is important because while 40% of issues related to infertility are problems in the woman, another 40% are related to problems associated with the man.
